Aftershock Harlequin Temptation No 845Heat Jill Shalvis 9780373259458 Books

The summer before high school our neighbor gave us a box of books and this was one of them. They were lost during a move but two stood out in my memory and this is one of them. I enjoyed it then so recently I bought it again for the trip down memory lane.
This book is a really easy read and depending on your free time could easily be read in a day or two. The writing is good so the pages pass quickly as you get absorb in the story.
I gave it three stars because of two very simple reason. One is the whole concept is a bit unrealistic. I am not sure how many woman who believe they are going to die will have sex with a complete stranger who go figures happens to be the perfect male women want. Then after having his baby she just happens to run into him at a doctors office.
The biggest reason I dislike this book is the leading character Amber. She is suppose to be a woman who after being raised by a stern, controlling father and a bad relationship with a controlling ex fiancee puts on a cold front in her life so she never gets hurts. I think she is more of a mental case who needs help she is suspicious and jealous first she refuses to thank him because he is flirting with another woman then when she sees him with his sister though they just ran into each other again after a year. When he wants to work out a way to see his daughter she jumps to the conclusion he plans to report her as bad mother to get custody. Amber has so many mood swings you have no idea what is going to happen. I know it is suppose to be the whole she is hurt, needy, vulnerable woman who put up walls that Mr. Right has to tear down but it is too much.

Aftershock Harlequin Temptation No 845Heat Jill Shalvis 9780373259458 Books Reviews

I have read most of Jill Shalvis' books and usually really love them. This one is the exception. Could not like Amber. Hello counseling called for. Not sure what Dax saw in her. It was that way all through the story. Then everything seemed to come together at the end. One of the reasons I finished the book was to write the review. I really recommend most of er books, just not this one.
The beginning of this book sucked me in and the stakes that got raised by the third chapter kept me turning the pages. But then things started to fall apart for me and I've figured out why...

The premise of this book is a charming fire inspector, Dax, and an uptight real estate agent, Amber, get trapped in a dilapidated building during an earthquake. During those few hours of near death experiences they give into temptation and have coitus (I've been watching too much Big Bang Theory!). Afterwards, they get separated. Well, not really. She runs away from the scene, and then further away to Mexico. Once there she discovers she's pregnant. During the "aftershocks" both try in a lackluster manner to find each other with poor results. A year later, they bump into each other in the pediatrician's office. Big surprise for Dax!

All of that was fantastic! Dax is carefree with no attachments, but still responsible. Amber is a hot mess of insecurity because of her upbringing and she has low self esteem. That's a major reason for her not trying too hard to contact Dax, as well as for dodging his later attempts at becoming a family. And let me tell you, she dodges, ducks, and dives. She's mean, she's standoffish...she's a total Bitch to him. Yet he keeps coming back for more. That's what drove me absolutely insane. I have never met a man who would take that abuse and top it with some serious insecurities, low self esteem, and daddy issues. Shalvis may have brought me around if there had been more inner monologue over it. But there wasn't. A lot of their inner monologues, at this point in the book, focused on their activities and not their wounds or the reasons behind their wounds. Character growth didn't happen until 90% and by then I just didn't care.
I normally love Jill Shalvis, but I was bitterly disappointed in this book. In fact, I couldn't finish it. The premise was great but there was no character growth and pretty much no plot. I felt like I was reading the same inner dialogue over and over (and over and over). Lots of sex after the same ole, same ole turmoil. I think perhaps this was an old book but not sure. They should tell us these things so we can at least be easier on the author. At any rate, I returned for a refund when I finally realized this story was really no story at all.
Amber and Dax meet when an earthquake hits Southern California in an abandoned warehouse. Fast forward one year and they meet again at a doctor's office. Dax is there with his pregnant sister and Amber is with her three month old daughter, Taylor. Taylor is Dax's daughter that he didn't know about and wants to be a part of her and Amber lives. It is a fun read as to how Dax convenices Amber that he is trustworthy and will always be there for the two of them.
She is a Realtor and he is a fire investigator who get trapped in the basement of an old building during an earthquake. It is a life or death situation
finding themselves together as strangers in the dark while a building disintegrates above them. The trauma has her taking a leave of absence to
Mexico and he in turn takes a job fighting wild fires in Montana when she discovers she is pregnant and can not get in touch with him until they both have a mutual doctors appointment at the same clinic a year later. The story then begins in how they learn about each other, how they
learn how to trust, and to share responsibility of their child. It is a good story!
